Cannabis seeds can remain viable for years when stored properly — or lose their germination potential in months when stored poorly. Whether you are saving seeds from a favorite harvest or building a collection from premium breeders, proper storage is essential.
The Three Enemies of Seed Viability
Seeds degrade from exposure to three things: light, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. Light triggers premature metabolic activity. Moisture can cause seeds to germinate prematurely or develop mold. Temperature swings stress the seed and reduce energy reserves needed for germination.
Short-Term Storage (Under 1 Year)
For seeds you plan to use within a year, a cool dark drawer works fine. Place seeds in an airtight container — UV glass jars are ideal because they block visible light while maintaining an airtight seal. Add a small silica gel packet to absorb residual moisture. Room temperature between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit is adequate.
Long-Term Storage (1 to 5+ Years)
For long-term storage, refrigeration is the gold standard. Place seeds in an airtight UV glass jar with a silica packet and store in the back of your refrigerator at 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Some growers use freezer storage for very long-term preservation — seeds must be completely dry before freezing.
Testing Germination Rates
If unsure of viability, test a small batch using the paper towel method. Viable seeds should crack and show a taproot within 24 to 72 hours. Seeds from reputable breeders stored properly should maintain germination rates above 80% for three to five years.
